Program Structure
Weekly NYSSMA Preparation Lessons
Students receive weekly private lessons focused specifically on NYSSMA requirements, repertoire expectations, and performance readiness.​ ​ Lessons emphasize: -Technical clarity and consistency -Tempo, rhythm, and musical accuracy -Targeted preparation aligned with adjudication standards ​​ These lessons form the technical foundation of the program.
Group Performance
Classes
Group classes are a required component to the program and are led by Pluckd Studio​'s directors, David Gale and Roslyn Huang. ​ These sessions focus on areas that private lessons alone cannot replicate, including:​ ​ -How NYSSMA adjudicators evaluate performances -Common scoring pitfalls and how to avoid them -Performance stamina, nerves, and recovery strategies​​ -Performing under pressure and in front of your peers -Scales and Sightreading ​ Group size is intentionally limited to maintain focus and feedback.
Mock Adjudication and Feedback
Each student participates in a NYSSMA-style mock adjudication designed to simulate real evaluation conditions.​ ​ Students receive;​ ​ -A full performance run through -Written rubric based feedback -A readiness assessment and score projection​ ​​ This process allows students to identify gaps early and adjust preparation accordingly.
Final Performance and Readiness
As adjudication approaches, preparation shifts from learning to execution.​​ ​ Students focus on: ​ -Consistency and Control -Mental preparation and confidence -Performing with clarity under pressure​​ ​​ The goal is not perfection, but reliable, repeatable performance on evaluation day.
